Since 2011 St James’ has hosted an exciting annual Concert Series. These present a hugely varied repertoire ranging from early to contemporary music and involve some superb instrumentalists as well as the renowned Choir of St James’.

The 2017 Concert Series was launched at our final Orchestral Mass at St James’ Church on Sunday 29 January at 10:00am and is supported by the Friends of Music at St James’. All bookings are made with City Recital Hall.

Ever since its first performance in Leipzig on Good Friday 1724, J.S. Bach’s setting of the St John Passion has been a mainstay of the musical calendar in both concert hall and church. It recounts the harrowing last days of Christ and his journey to the cross through dramatic narrative and human reflection. Soloists include Richard Butler (Evangelist), Sally-Anne Russell and Christopher Richardson.

Australian Baroque Brass

Journeys through Europe were an educational rite of passage which flourished through the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. Searching for art, culture and education through exposure to classical antiquity and the Renaissance, they became extremely fashionable with the polite English upper classes. Tracing our journey through music of the ages and the various cities visited, this is a concert steeped in the wonderment of the European Baroque, featuring music by Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi and others.

Indulge in music associated with pilgrimage and the search for spiritual nourishment. Concluding with the glories of the Spanish Renaissance, our epic journey arrives in monumental Santiago de Compostela. Music by Clemens non Papa, Victoria, Morales, and Jackson’s To the Field of Stars (excerpts).

A programme of sumptuous choral music reflecting the end of mortal life and the journey beyond. Moving from the depths of despair to light that brings hope and new birth, The Choir of St James’ and Trinity College Choir, Melbourne join together to perform Tallis’ famous 40-part motet Spem in alium Gabriel Jackson’s 40-part homage to Tallis, Sanctum est verum lumen, and other monumental works from the Renaissance to the present day by Byrd, Tavener, and Whitacre.

Marking the 500th anniversary of Luther’s publication of The Ninety-Five Theses, the Reformation threw the Catholic church into schism, with the hope and desire to transition and rebuild a new doctrine of faith and belief. Music of the Lutheran Reformation is placed alongside masterpieces of the English Reformation, which form the backbone of the continuation of Anglican church music in our modern time. Featuring J.S. Bach’s Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (BWV 80) and William Byrd’s The Great Service.
