Janitsch & the Musical Academy II
While employed at the court of Frederick the Great, double bass player Johann Gottlieb Janitsch (1708 – c.1763) established a series of private musical entertainments called Freitags-Akademien (Friday Academies) in which he and esteemed contemporaries performed the latest chamber music for a variety of instrumental combinations. Carl Heinrich Graun was Director of Music, and his brother Johann Gottlieb Graun leader of the court orchestra. Belonging to the next generation, Matthes was a celebrated oboist and chamber musician at the Berlin court.
